Swell and Swale

Forms that celebrate the geologic history of a site.

In 2021, I collaborated with sculptor Jamie Topper on the design and installation of a landscape earth art feature at the Sand Ridge Campus of the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

The piece explores the intersection of interpretive nature exhibits and large scale public art. The installation functions as a stylized interpretation of the dune/swale geology of the Calumet Region and the process of sand dune formation through wind, water, and time. The landscape art feature represents a series of sand dunes, cut in cross section to reveal striated bands of earth that illustrate how a dune forms.

Beginning with a concept provided by SpaceHaus, we worked to make the geology of the larger landscape more visible to walkers and bikers along the Burnham Greenway trail.
